Hengzhou Jasmine, a specialty of Hengzhou City, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, and a national geographical indication product of China.
Hengzhou City has a long history of planting jasmine flowers, which is said to have a history of six to seven hundred years. It is famous for its early flowering period, long flowering period, large flower buds, high yield, good quality, and strong fragrance. The planting area of jasmine in Hengzhou City reaches 100000 mu, with 330000 flower farmers and an annual output of 80000 tons of fresh flowers. The production of jasmine flowers accounts for more than 80% of China's total output and more than 60% of the world's total. It has been named the "Hometown of Chinese Jasmine" by the State Forestry Administration and the China Flower Association.
On July 12, 2006, the former General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine approved the implementation of geographical indication product protection for "Hengzhou Jasmine Flower".

Product Features

Jasmine is a flower variety with important ornamental and economic value. Hengzhou jasmine, a double petal jasmine, has higher yield, stronger aroma, and stronger disease resistance compared to single petal and multi petal jasmine. It is famous for its early flowering period, long flowering period, large flower buds, full and white color, and rich aroma.

Compared with jasmine flowers in other parts of China, the jasmine flowers in Hengzhou City have the advantages of early flowering period, long flowering period (from April to the end of October), large flower buds, high yield, good quality, and strong aroma; Hengzhou jasmine tea has tight and even strands, rich aroma, long-lasting freshness, rich and mellow taste, tender and even leaf cover, and is resistant to brewing.

Origin environment

Hengzhou City is located in the southeast of Guangxi, east of Nanning City, adjacent to Guigang City to the east, Lingshan County and Pubei County to the south, Qingxiu District to the west, and Binyang County to the north. Located between 108 ° 48 '-109 ° 37' E longitude and 22 ° 08 '-23 ° 30' N latitude, with a total area of 3448 square kilometers. Hengzhou City is located south of the Tropic of Cancer, with abundant water resources and an average annual rainfall of 1450 millimeters. The favorable climate conditions nurture abundant animal and plant resources.

The abundant production of jasmine in Hengzhou City is not only related to local planting habits, but also due to its unique geographical environment: Hengzhou City belongs to a typical subtropical monsoon climate, with abundant rainfall, ample sunshine, and high soil organic matter content, which is very suitable for the growth of jasmine.
 

Historical tracing

The history of planting jasmine flowers in Hengzhou City has been recorded in writing for over 400 years. In the 45th year of the Jiajing reign of the Ming Dynasty (1566), Wang Ji, a judge of Hengzhou Prefecture, recorded in his book "The Mirror of the Gentleman's Hall for Daily Inquiry" that "the jasmine in Hengzhou City is very wide, and there are those who use it to weave fences, and it often blooms at all times

The "Records of Hengzhou · Local Products" in the Ming Dynasty also had similar records. Chen Kuiyong, a poet in the Ming Dynasty, wrote a poem which goes like this: "The species transplanted from foreign lands is worthy of praise. Why is its fragrance loved only when it adorns the side of one's hair? In a secluded study, the fragrance of several blossoms seeps out from time to time, and wonderful thoughts and poetic feelings are transformed into beautiful flowers." What it describes is the jasmine flower.
 
Since 2005, a total of four products in Hengzhou City, namely "Jasmine", "Jasmine Tea", "Turnip" and "Nanshan White-haired Tea", have been protected by national geographical indications. It is one of the counties in Guangxi with the largest number of such protected products.

In line with the requirements of "internationalization and standardization", Hengzhou City has formulated a series of implementation plans for the development of the jasmine industry. It has established the "Jasmine Expert Courtyard", the standardized production base for jasmine, the standardized processing base for jasmine tea, the National Key Laboratory for Jasmine and Its Products, the Guangxi Jasmine (Tea) Product Quality Supervision and Inspection Center, the China Jasmine Garden, the Core Demonstration Area of the Hengzhou Jasmine Industry, the E-commerce Center for Jasmine Tea, the Southwest Tea City which is one of the four major tea markets in China, and the China Jasmine Tea Trading Center Market. It has also improved the guarantee systems for the production, processing, sales, transportation, service, information, tourism and management of the jasmine (tea) industry, and comprehensively promoted the development of the jasmine (tea) industry.

In 2007, Hengzhou City built the China Jasmine Garden.
In 2014, Hengzhou City established the China Jasmine Industry (Core) Demonstration Area. In the same year, it successfully applied for and set up the first "National Geographical Indication Product Protection Demonstration Area" in Guangxi, effectively regulating and driving the development of the geographical indication product industry in Hengzhou City.
In 2015, the China Jasmine Industry (Core) Demonstration Area in Hengzhou City was upgraded to the "Guangxi Modern Characteristic Agriculture (Core) Demonstration Area".
In 2017, Hengzhou City began to create a national modern agricultural industrial park. After ten years of development, the planting area of jasmine in the park has reached 55,000 mu, with continuous large-scale planting. The annual comprehensive output value of the jasmine industry has reached 4.9 billion yuan, accounting for more than 60% of the total output value of the industrial park. As of October 2017, the jasmine industry in the industrial park had applied for 67 invention patents, among which 30 had already been granted invention patents.
From 2000 to 2017, Hengzhou City also successfully held ten sessions of the National Jasmine Tea Trade Expo and eight sessions of the China (Hengzhou City) Jasmine Culture Festival, enhancing the popularity and influence of local jasmine and jasmine tea.
In 2018, the "2018 China Brand Value Evaluation Information Release and the 2nd China Brand Development Forum" was held in Shanghai. At the forum site, the brand values of 718 well-known national brands were released. Among them, Hengzhou Jasmine Tea and Hengzhou Jasmine ranked 28th and 63rd respectively, with brand strength scores of 843 and 915 and brand values of 14.547 billion yuan and 5.198 billion yuan respectively.
